Here are a few highlights and news tidbits from the past month:
Field Improvement Updates
The sights and sounds of summer in Marin tend not to include too much soccer. Instead travel, beach days, and shuttered schools occupy the eyes and ears. There’s always some construction noise and dust filling the air, and fortunately for us this summer that includes field improvement projects around the county. Hall Middle School, Drake High School, and the College of Marin are all going through turf replacement or conversion, improvements that will add much-needed quality and availability to FC and others.
In Team News
A couple of teams did hit the road before summer break. The Boys ’02 Blue landed at the National Development Academy event in Indianapolis, where they chalked up two decisive wins and a narrow loss in a Midwest downpour. On the girls’ side, the ’05 Blue set their sights locally on the North Coast Nike Cup, and in giving up only one goal through the entire tournament, took the Cup decisively.

Lastly, as enjoyable as the sights and sounds of sunshine and relaxation are, trainings and tournaments will be back upon us faster than a seagull will snatch your lunch at Stinson Beach. To kick off our club’s fall season, the board has slated the evening of August 31st, a Thursday, for a two-part club gathering. Part one will be an informational session about the future of the club, including items like new graphics and uniforms, with part 2 transitioning to a rooftop cocktail “thank you” party. Please mark your calendars!

Here are a few highlights and news tidbits from the past month:
On the Field
Several of our teams participated in US Club Nationals, to great review.
Our 00 blue boys took part in the Cerritos Cup in So Cal, losing in the final to round out what has been an eventful few weeks for the team.
Our 02, 03 and 04 blue boys wrapped up their Development Academy seasons playing in the Bay Oaks tournament. The 02 blue boys then took part in the Development Academy Showcase in Indiana, where they went 2-1-0 with a goal differential of plus six. Top Drawer listed Casey Walls as one of the top 19 players at the Showcase, a huge honor.
A Beautiful Day
The month was dominated by the Eloi Run &Walk, which enjoyed fantastic weather and a great turnout. The UC Berkeley Men’s Head Coach, Kevin Grimes, and the San Francisco State Men’s Head Coach, Javier Hill, a former assistant at UC Berkeley, both ran. One of Eloi’s former teammates, a current San Jose “Earthquake”, also attended. It was a wonderful day, and huge thanks to those that oversaw the event.

Finally, congratulations to Dave Frank, coach of the 98 blue boys and 01 blue boys, and Monica Chazen on their June 18th nuptials.

In Scholarship News
We are proud to announce that Miguel Sanchez (B02) is the first recipient of the Eloi Vasquez Living for the Game Scholarship. Miguel has been a fabulous contributor to the 2000 age group both on and off the field since joining the club in his U14 year. We hope this contribution will help support his aspirations both on the field and in the classroom, as he honors Eloi’s legacy and name.

Eloi Run & Walk Summary
The overall winner and fastest runner 18 and younger was Mesgna Neghasi for the second year running, with a record time of 42.19, 44 seconds faster than his inaugural race time. This year’s runner-up was also an 18 or younger, Otto Ryersen, who came in at 44:09. The fastest male runner 19 and older was Lucas Janetos with a time of 45.11.
The fastest female runner 19 and older was Megan Pullen with a time of 53.31, and the fastest female runner 18 and younger was Julia Hopkins, who ran 56.34. Complete race results will be available on our website in the next 48 hours.
Considering the many conflicts we experienced in scheduling the race, including the Dipsea and US Club Regionals to name just two, we were very pleased with the overall race count of 240 participants. The event raised approximately $23,000, which means we’ve generated about 75% of the funds necessary to fully fund one annual scholarship. We hope to reach this mark next year before driving on towards a second annual scholarship award.
This quote from one of the participants best captures the event: “I wanted to pass along how wonderful and how personally moved I was by the Eloi Run. Thank you for hosting this event and enabling us to share in Eloi’s memory and wisdom.”. We were all touched by Eloi and are honored to carry on his legacy by supporting this event. Photographs of the event will be posted on Eloi.org soon. We’ll send an email to all club and race constituents to notify you of their availability.
